Are American Citizens Dumb?

I am often bemused how left leaning media attacks democratic opponents. It reminds me of my school days when a kid might poke fun of another. More often than not, when they can’t come up with clever remarks, it resorts to, “You’re just dumb!” How many times during the Bush administration did we all have to suffer through talking points, over and over again, questioning the intelligence of President Bush. However, President Obama is rarely considered dumb-though there certainly exists fuel for doing so. And never mind that Bush is not only a graduate of Harvard like Obama, but Yale too. And now that Rick Perry is leading the Republicans candidates, Politico released an article recently entitled, “Is Rick Perry Dumb?”

But I think we need to turn the question around. I think we all need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, are WE dumb? We elected a person to the presidency that had no experience in leadership. He never ran anything and we have put him in charge of the largest economy in the world and Commander in chief of the largest armed services in the world. What were we thinking? The proof is in the pudding as to how he has handled the economy. He is doing the exact wrong thing at the wrong time. He has shown how little knowledge he possesses about how economies work. I do not believe I need to go into detail about that-the results are very apparent. His attachment to the ideology of the New Deal way of thinking has cost us all any hope of recovery until we can get someone in with the intelligence and courage to change the policies. There are many on the left that are married to the notion that temporary government jobs can bring about permanent growth. That the free market has to be interfered with and regulated to death.

There was this study done and an article written in 2004 by UCLA economists that declared FDR’s policies prolonged the Depression by 7 years. I think the concluding paragraph says it all: “The fact that the Depression dragged on for years convinced generations of economists and policy-makers that capitalism could not be trusted to recover from depressions and that significant government intervention was required to achieve good outcomes,” Cole said. “Ironically, our work shows that the recovery would have been very rapid had the government not intervened.” I’ll have the link and you can read how for years, historians have chosen to rewrite history to support their way of thinking, even though the facts do not support it. Obama has bought into this, that we the citizens, we that own businesses, we that are the consumers cannot think for ourselves, cannot make good choices, need assistance with almost every decision we make, from what food we should eat, to what car to drive, to our health care choices and even how our businesses should be run-that a free market can’t dictate the winners and losers. Green companies-whatever they are-should be the winners, no matter that the business models don’t work. Government is subsidizing businesses and people that do not work-GM, ethanol, the unemployed. And they are not rewarding success,  instead demonizing businesses that are successful. Remember the CEO of Toyota being called before Congress regarding the made up notion that their cars had acceleration problems? Are we the fools for voting for this administration?

Well, perhaps. How many of us have any kind of understanding of economics? Can we tell the difference between macro and micro economics? Do we know which policies will most likely be effective and why? How many of us have an understanding of American History and can tell the difference between an American Government and the French government. How many have read and understand the Federalists papers. What is a Republic? You know-to be a naturalized citizen, one has to know more about the United States than most American high school graduates?

Another question I pose to you. Have you read George Orwell’s 1984? My 14-year-old son is reading it and is amazed how the government depicted in this book is similar in policies of the government we have now. Are any of you upset that the country so many people have fought and died for is being handed over to be run by those we have in government now? And we voted for this “change” ourselves. Don’t you feel dumb? I know I do. I did not vote for Obama, but I also did not realize either-the significant mistake we have made as a country in doing so. What are we doing? What should we be doing?

I think we need to bone up on economics, American History, get involved in elections. And take on making sure our kids are not as dumb as we are.
